Codemasters, developer and publisher of GRID, has snapped up Slightly Mad Studios for $30 million, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

Codemasters specialises in the vroom-vroom genre of game, producing the Dirt, F1, Micro Machines, and TOCA series. It has also made a collection of titles including Operation Flashpoint, Overlord, and Rise of the Argonauts. Everyone working under Project CARS developer Slightly Mad Studios will be transferred to Codemasters, and the deal was sealed with a $30 million fee combined with an three-year earnout clause.

Codemasters CEO Frank Sagnier expressed his enthusiasm to collaborate with Slightly Mad Studios, and stated that the partnership will “create the future generation of racing franchises.” Slightly Mad Studios has three titles in the works. These are the mobile spinoff Project CARS Go, a game inspired by “a Hollywood blockbuster movie franchise”,  and a project drawing on the developer’s own catalogue of properties.

“Codemasters’ acquisition of SMS will create a global leader in the racing genre,” Sagnier told GamesIndustry.biz. “Their focus on AAA quality and the passion that they put into everything they create mirrors our own. Both companies have a number of world renowned, successful franchises along with exciting product development pipelines, supported by leading IP and some of the best talent in the gaming industry.”

GRID and Project CARS 2 are out now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
