PlayStation-exclusive racing series Gran Turismo has sold over 80.4 million copies worldwide since its debut more than 20 years ago, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced.

The Polyphony-developed franchise launched on PlayStation back in December 1997 in Japan, and has appeared on every major Sony platform to date. The most recent instalment, Gran Turismo Sport, hit PlayStation 4 in October 2017.

'It's hard to imagine that 80.4 million copies of Gran Turismo have been played during the 20-year history of the franchise,' said creator Kazunori Yamauchi. 'It makes me really happy to think of the immense amount of time that has been poured into playing our games!'

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec on PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling instalment in the turbo-charged series, with nearly 15 million copies sold worldwide. Sales started to taper off however with the release of Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 back in 2013.

Right now it's unknown if there will be a Gran Turismo 7, although it's probably a safe bet to assume there will be.
