Sucker Punch are deciding their next game after Ghost of Yotei soon, and the studio’s head has discussed the difficulties involved in choosing between “continuing Ghost or going back to Sly,” as well as delivering other fan-requests such as more InFamous. Ghost of Yotei is a fantastic sequel to the excellent Ghost of Tsushima, and Sucker Punch have suggested furthering the series through more different time periods and settings belonging to Japanese history. While fans would love a continuation of Ghost as well as new installments of Sly and InFamous, the sad reality is that Sucker Punch can only do one project at a time.
Ghost of Yotei devs will decide next game soon
Videogameschronicle recently conducted an interview with Sucker Punch studio head and co-founder, Brian Fleming. According to the interview, Sucker Punch will decide their next game after releasing the Ghost of Yotei multiplayer add-on, Legends. There’s no release date for the Legends mode yet as it’s simply slated for 2026.
While Sucker Punch supposedly haven’t chosen their next game yet, Brian Fleming has discussed the difficulties involved with the decision. Fleming said, “whatever we do next, whether it’s continuing Ghost or going back to Sly, the decision is really more limited by, again, our cherishing of focus and time to iterate, which means that we really can only do one thing at a time”.
Sucker Punch’s co-founder added, “If we were good at juggling four projects, yeah, we’d have a remaster, and let’s go do one of those, and one of those, and do some fan request, that would be really popular… But we only get to do one thing”. In addition to only having time for one project, Fleming said, “it has to be your best idea” rather than one of the “15 good ideas,” and compared the decision to “choosing your college and your major every five years”.
Back in July, Ghost of Yotei co-creative director, Nate Fox, was asked by GameInformer about returning to InFamous. In this interview, Fox said that he “would love to work on more InFamous,” and that he “would love to see a trilogy rerelease”. However, he cited the same problem as Fleming, stating that “Sucker Punch is a one game at a time shop”.
Sucker Punch’s internal struggles are understandable as we can relate as fans. Sure, we’d love another instalment of InFamous as Second Son was the last in 2014, but that would come at the expense of Sly, which was last seen in 2013. Sanzaru Games developed the last Sly Cooper, Thieves in Time, but they wouldn’t be able to develop a new entry as they were acquired by Facebook for VR games development in 2020.
Similarly, we’d love a continuation of Ghost, but that would come at the cost of InFamous and Sly Cooper. In an ideal world, we’d love all three series to be able to share the spotlight, but it’s just not possible based off Sucker Punch’s comments. Hopefully Sony can figure something out in the future with other studios, but right now we’d probably bank on Sucker Punch delivering more Ghost next rather than returning to the past.
In other Ghost of Yotei news, the actress for Atsu has discussed her inspirations for the role as well as the “daunting” task of replacing Jin.
