A lot of people are interested in the sales figures for Ghost of Yotei, and, while there’s nothing official from Sony, what’s reported has been regarded as “peculiar” and not a “firm confirmation”. Ghost of Yotei is a stellar sequel to Tsushima, and it has debuted with a near-perfect rating on the PlayStation store from fans, meanwhile, its Metacritic score has surpassed Tsushima. While the game is another masterpiece from Sucker Punch, we are still yet to learn whether it has been a commercial success.

Ghost of Yotei’s reported sales figures are “peculiar”

On X, Daniel Camilo, a gaming/China consultant who has previously contributed to gamesindustry.biz, reported that “Director of Sales Operations for PlayStation China posted today a peculiar message celebrating 2 million copies sold by Ghost of Yotei”.

Camilo further added that “The message and image used are ‘peculiar’ to say the least, but the sales number seem to align/confirm current sayings”. As for why the image used is “peculiar,” it’s because it is AI and is linked to a Facebook account named Jharila FF.

As for where the PlayStation Director of Sales Operations for China’s post stems from, Camilo claims it was made and shared through “WeChat ‘Moments’”. Camilo further elaborates that the “source is accurate and relevant,” but “I did not (and do not) claim that post to be a firm confirmation of the mentioned sales numbers!”.

It’s possible the sales figures are accurate, or it’s also possible China’s PlayStation Director of Sales Operations stumbled across the AI image and thought it official at the time of sharing. Unfortunately, we do not know, but the image saying “2 million copy sold” is definitely fake and AI rather than anything official from Sony.

Unfortunately, we won’t know how many copies Ghost of Yotei has sold globally until Sony make an official announcement. All we properly know courtesy of The Game Business’ Chris Dring is that Yotei’s UK physical launch sales were “almost 3x what Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on Switch did,” and it “beat the second week of EA Sports FC 26”. Chris Dring also mentioned that Yotei’s physical launch sales in the UK were “impressive,” but “down about 40%” from Tsushima.

Regardless of speculation around its sales numbers, Ghost of Yotei is another excellent PS5 console exclusive. It stars Atsu this time, and star Erika Ishii recognised that replacing Jin was a “daunting” prospect, however, they were able to deliver a phenomenal performance inspired by the likes of Kill Bill to Clint Eastwood.

While a lot of fans would love to see a return to InFamous, it seems we will be served more Ghost in the future as Sucker Punch are interested in continuing to explore different time periods and settings belonging to Japan’s rich history.
