Famed video game actor, Feodor Chin, plays Lord Saito in Ghost of Yotei and was also part of Tsushima as Lord Adachi. One of the biggest debacles heading into Ghost of Yotei was the replacement of fan-favorite Jin for Atsu, but, in a new interview with Gamereactor, Chin has shared his belief that the time skip was the “right move” by Sucker Punch.
Chin told Gamereactor, “I think I remember being there when they told me. And it certainly was surprising”. However, although taken aback by Sucker Punch not doing a direct sequel to Tsushima, Chin believes it was ” the right move” even with the realisation that “with any beloved franchise, you’re going to disappoint somebody”.
Lord Saito’s actor elaborated that it was a “pretty smart move” to take Yotei in a “completely different direction” with the time skip. This is because the change in time to the Edo period and in protagonist from Jin to Atsu allowed the sequel to “remain within the same world as Tsushima [while adding] a lot of new stuff to introduce to new gamers who are new to it [the Ghost franchise]”.
Ghost of Yotei Vs. Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Yotei takes place over 300 years after Tsushima. Yotei is set in 1603 while Tsushima happened all the way back in 1274. Yotei also stars new protagonist, Atsu, while Tsushima starred Jin Sakai.
Heading into Yotei, there was a lot of trepidation about the replacement of Jin because he was an excellent protagonist. Sucker Punch previously replaced the fan-favorite Cole McGrath of InFamous with the forgettable Delsin Rowe for Second Son, so it’s understandable that fans feared a change in protagonist as equally disappointing.
Thankfully, Atsu is a fantastic character just as compelling and fun to play as Jin. Reflecting on the role, Atsu’s actress, Erika Ishii, has said she realized replacing Jin was a “daunting” proposition, but starring in a PlayStation IP was the “realization of a dream”. She was also able to deliver a phenomenal performance by taking inspiration from the likes of Kill Bill to Clint Eastwood.
Sucker Punch hasn’t decided their next game, and they have discussed the challenges in deciding whether to continue Ghost or returning to Sly Cooper. If we do get a sequel to Ghost of Yotei, expect another leap in time as Sucker Punch has said they want to continue exploring different time periods and settings belonging to Japanese history.
