Speaking during a CES keynote last week (reported by Edge), Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith revealed that Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock has become the first single game to surpass $1 billion in sales.

This news comes just a year after Activision announced that the Guitar Hero franchise overall had broke the $1 billion sales milestone – Guitar Hero launched on the PlayStation 2 in November 2005.

The success of Guitar Hero is also rubbing off on the artists featured in the games, with Griffith noting that according to Nielsen data, download sales for artists appearing in Guitar Hero have risen 15-843 per cent. First week sales of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith are also said to have tripled the first-week sales of the band’s previous album.
