Gears of War: Ultimate Edition has surprise launched on Windows 10, offering PC gamers with the suitable hardware to run the game at 4K with higher quality character models and environments.

Based on the Ultimate Edition launched for Xbox One last year, the game boasts the same improvements to lights, shadows, reflections, but also benefits from further improvements to character models and environments.

“More immediately noticeable – and unique to DirectX version – are the improvements to the characters and environments,” says Cam McRae, technical director at The Coalition.

All objects in the game have been “uprezzed” in polygon count by around 10-30 per cent, while the majority of character models are doubled. Textures too have been improved.

To get an experience on par with the Xbox One version you’ll need to run at Medium settings, whilst you should be able to achieve all the bells and whistles at 4K 60fps with a high-end system equipped with at least a GeForce 980 Ti.

Look out for a future update which introduces support for DirectX 12’s Mutliadapter feature, allowing the game to draw resources from mutlitple GPUs.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is available now from the Windows 10 Store.
