Having been handed a Z rating by Japan’s Computer Entertainment Rating Organization, Gears of War was expected to achieve disappointing sales – the Z rating, roughly equivalent to North America’s Adults Only rating, makes the game much more difficult to get hold of.

Against the odds, Gears of War managed to sell 33,212 copies in during its first week on sale in Japan, taking a spot at No.7 in the Japanese video game chart. With only around 300,000 Xbox 360 consoles in the hands of Japanese gamers, coupled with the Western targeted nature of the game and the Z rating, 33,000 units sold isn’t too shabby.

To put this into perspective, Blue Dragon, a highly anticipated Japanese targeted game, sold 80,000 units in its first week.

It’s unlikely that Gears will sell many more units though, with the majority of Xbox 360 titles exiting the chart as quickly as they entered.
