Gears of War 4 is set 25 years after events of Gears of War 3 and will feature the son of Marcus Fenix as the primary protagonist, reports Game Informer.

The game will focus on a new cast of characters, the leads being the aforementioned JD Fenix, plus Kait Diaz and Delmont “Del” Walker.

JD Fenix

JD Fenix is described as an idealist who ran away from home at a young age to join the the COG militia. He went AWOL after a classified incident, details of which will be shared with players during Gears 4.

JD is played by Liam McIntyre who will be best known for his time as the lead in Starz’s Spartacus series.

“It’s kind of terrifying, because I get to be the lead in a new era of Gears, which is unbelievable, amazing, and exciting,” said McIntyre on. “I’m the legacy, because my dad is Marcus Fenix. JD’s a soldier and a bit of a freedom fighter, and in his heart he’s a bit of a renegade. He’s different from Marcus, but he’s still that heroic archetype.”

Kait Diaz

Born and raised outside of the walled city-states protecting most of humanity, Kait comes from a family of Outsiders. She forms a quick friendship with JD. Kait is played by Laura Bailey, who has previously voiced Spartan Olympia Vale in Halo 5, and Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft.

Delmont “Del” Walker

An ex-COG soldier, Del was an orphan who became friends with JD at boarding school. He shares history of the classified incident with JD. Del is played by Eugene Byrd, who only recently appeared as Marcus “Boomer” Boone in Battlefield Hardline.

A few other tidbits to come from Game Informer include confirmation of two-player split-screen co-op, though how many players are supported online hasn’t been announced. There will also be a major emphasis on multiplayer, supporting the needs of both casual and eSports players. Lastly The Coalition says fans of Horde mode won’t be disappointed, though no details have been given.

Gears of War 4 is scheduled to launch for Xbox One this holiday season.
