While speaking to the convention of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in Seattle, Gates let slip that the company’s next console (which he only referred to as Xenon) will be arriving this year. He also commented on the console’s media capabilities, touting it as a machine with functions of a slightly cut-down windows media centre PC.
These comments don’t quite fit with what Gates said in a recent interview with Engadget. “The high-end scenario for us is you’ve got Media Center PC, that’s where your state is, but then you’ve got your Xenon out that are connecting up to that,” said Gates. This suggested a console that might not be the all-in-one media device that people expected, but these recent comments make the situation a little unclear.
It’s doubtful that we will know the console’s exact functions until the Microsoft pre-E3 press conference on May 16th, but some details might be revealed during the half hour MTV special on May 12th (13th in the UK). We’ll keep you updated should we hear any more.
