Speaking at a meeting of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, Bill Gates, Microsoft Chairman, has commented on what he believes can happen in the next-generation videogame era.

Our goal in the last generation was to be in the game,” Gates said. “We came out of this round a strong number two. What we’ve got in this [next round], at some significant financial cost, was the right to play again with great credibility. So now people are looking at the two companies [Sony and Microsoft] at a pretty much equal basis.”

With the next Xbox Microsoft clearly want to push into the HD era, with almost all of the company’s official press releases about the console making some mention to its HD abilities. Sony don’t seem to be all that worried about the threat from Microsoft, with Molly Smith, a Sony spokeswoman commenting that “We look at delivering a quantum leap in technology, not just Xbox version 1.5.” Harsh words indeed.

The general public will get their first look at the next Xbox console on May 12th (May 13th in Europe) in a half hour MTV special.
