Recent price-gouging sales on Apple’s App Store are damaging to smaller publishers and risk forcing developers to sacrifice innovation. That’s according to Michel Guillemot, founder and CEO of derivative supremo publisher Gameloft.

Guillemot was speaking to IGN regarding EA’s recent tactic of reducing virtually their entire catalogue (including new App Store releases) to 59p a few days before Apple clocked off for the holidays – permanently fixing their games to the top of the charts for the vital holiday season. “There is a high uncertainty for the future anytime somebody can steal the market at Christmas,” he said.

Guillemot thinks such moves will trigger a trend of developers producing games that are only just “good enough”, instead of pushing the boundaries of the App Store.

The CEO also defended Gameloft’s practice of producing games which many people consider highly derivative. “The video game industry has always played around a limited number of themes. There is maybe one new idea a year,” he said.

Gameloft is one of the most prominent App Store publishers, and their titles – such as N.O.V.A (that one that’s a lot like Halo) and Shadow Guardian (the one that reminds us of Uncharted) – tend to push the upper echelons of App Store pricing. Which is about £2.
