Clearly a fan of quality control, Valve CEO Gabe Newell has admitted to having played the company’s upcoming strategy title, Dota 2, for in excess of 800 hours.

Speaking to PC gamer at gamescom in Cologne, Newell confirmed that he’s not alone when it comes to his extensive play sessions. In fact, many of his employees have been bitten by the Dota 2 bug, with many playing into the early hours of the morning.

“I’ve played Dota 2 for about 800 hours,” revealed Newell. “The cool thing about Dota 2 is that it’s probably the game that we’ve made that we’re most obsessed with playing. As a games developer, you tend to get pretty tired of the thing that you’re developing, because you had to experience all the flaws and the difficulties all along. You sort of reach the point where you’re like ‘Let’s just be done with this.’ Dota 2? Every day, after we’re done working on the game, everyone goes home and plays it ’till 2 or 3 in the morning.”

Beta sign-ups for Dota 2 have begun and the game is due for release before the end of 2011.
