Purchasers of Street Fighter 5 will need only the original disc in order to access future content updates, according to Capcom’s director of brand marketing and eSports.

Street Fighter 4 saw multiple physical releases throughout the last generation of console, each bringing new characters to the roster as well as overhauls to fighters already in the game, tweaking and balancing the game’s mechanics. But with Capcom’s next entry to the iconic fighting series, it seems that fans need only the one disc in order to access all future updates.

In an interview with eventhubs, director of brand marketing and eSports, Matt Dahlgren, confirmed that fans won’t need to fork out for new physical releases.

“This is the only disc you’re ever going to need to own to get all of the content in the game, but we’ll be revealing details of how our post-launch content happens at a later date, but it will be good news,” he said.

Dahlgren also shed more light on the developer’s approach to the roster.

“We want to start off with a core roster which will be inviting to new players. When you start off with a gigantic roster right off the bat, it can be pretty daunting for new players to figure out where to start,” he explained, before teasing brand new characters coming to Street Fighter. “Very soon in the future, you will see brand new characters for the franchise.”

Dahlgren was also asked about Capcom’s approach to story-based modes, off the back of NetherRealm’s successful Mortal Kombat X. “We are paying attention to how everybody handles story related content, and we will be doing things differently this time around for Street Fighter 5, but we’ll be sharing details on that at a later date.”

A PS4-exclusive online beta launches for Street Fighter 5 on July 23.
