From Software has responded to complaints concerning Dark Souls 2’s graphical downgrade, telling MCV that the game’s “resource management” was “constantly being balanced” throughout development, and that it is “very proud” of the game’s response from fans and the media.

“Throughout the game development process, a game is constantly being balanced not only in game playability, but also in the realm of resource management,” a From Software spokesperson said.

“A developer is always challenged with creating the most rewarding gaming experience while delivering continuity in graphical quality, gameplay dynamics, and balance within the game. The final version of Dark Souls II displays the culmination of this delicate balance and we’re very proud of the positive media and fan reception for the game.”

Dark Souls 2’s graphical downgrade was heavily criticised by fans following its release last week, with many people disappointed at the significant cuts made to the final game’s lighting and art assets.

But while From’s response may be true, it doesn’t explain why publisher Namco Bandai continued to promote early footage of Dark Souls 2 as PS3 “gameplay” footage just six weeks before the game’s release, or why the PS3 beta allegedly contained higher quality assets.

Was Namco aware that Dark Souls 2 would ship with significant cuts to its visuals? The publisher has yet to respond to VideoGamer.com’s request for comment.

UPDATE: Namco Bandai has provided VideoGamer.com with the same response as above, this time presented as a joint statement from both From Software and Namco Bandai Games Inc.
