Valve has confirmed earlier reports that the first pack of DLC for Portal 2 is scheduled for a summer release, and also revealed the content will be available free of charge on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

A press release states that the content will include new test chambers and a challenge mode which supports both single-player and co-op modes.

The pack will also include leaderboard support.

Valve’s brief announcement follows an earlier quote from Valve’s Doug Lombardi saying that Portal 2 DLC is coming this summer.

The news will likely delight players who picked up a copy on Xbox 360. In the past Valve has released Left 4 Dead DLC for free on Steam but charged 560MSP for it on Microsoft’s platform.

VideoGamer.com’s Jamin Smith dished out a full 10/10 in his Portal 2 review last week, declaring that “a mere ten minutes here will yield more memorable moments than you’re likely to squeeze out of the entirety of most other games this year. In all aspects of its design, Portal 2 is genius.”

One common rumour for Valve’s DLC charge on Xbox 360 is that Microsoft wasn’t comfortable with the studio releasing content for free. If that’s the case then it is clear Valve has managed to force Microsoft’s hand, possibly by reminding them that the content will be free on Sony’s console.
