EA has unveiled Battlefield Heroes, an all-new “Play 4 Free” cartoon-style shooter designed to bring the Battlefield gameplay to the mass audience.
The game is scheduled for release in the summer and will be the first title offered by EA completely for free, and will feature built-in matchmaking ensuring players of equal skill are put into matches.
Battlefield veterans DICE are handling development, with the game’s fun cartoon-style graphics (the first artwork looks very similar to Team Fortress 2) and gameplay intended to appeal to gamers of all skill levels. It should be easy to pick up and play, but promises robust character customization and a deep online meta-game.
The Play 4 Free game will generate revenue through advertising and micro-transactions, details on which are still to be announced.
“We put a different twist on this Battlefield game going with the cartoon-style graphics and gameplay,” said Ben Cousins, Senior Producer at EA DICE. “There’s something here for all types of players – be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers. With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games.”
