When Electronic Arts bought a 20% share in French publisher Ubisoft just before Christmas, the move was declared hostile by Ubisoft head honcho Yves Guillemot. Since then, the French government hinted that they may help in any defence against a takeover, and now fellow French-outfit Infogrames CEO Bruno Bonnell has let slip with a hint that they too may be willing to help.

Speaking to Reuters, Bonnell questioned EA’s motives for the stake in Ubisoft. “Electronic Arts certainly did not enter Ubi Soft’s capital to just stay at that level,” said Bonnell, giving the impression that he – like many other commentators inside and around the periphery of the industry – believe that a takeover bid is the natural evolution of EA’s initial move. Whilst not directly coming out and saying that Infogrames would be prepared to step in, he opened to door to be seen as a white-knight, stating that “when Ubi Soft has defined the limits within which it is prepared to work, they know we are ready to listen.”

EA have yet to comment, and indeed have not publicly stated any desire of a takeover, but this is sure to run. Keep focused on Pro-G for news as it develops.
