Spotted by The Gamer, Fortnite received some accusations of whitewashing The Simpsons’ character, Apu. Via the official Fortnite Status Twitter account, Epic Games has responded to the allegations by confirming the blunder “wasn’t intentional” and is “being adjusted in our next release”.

On November 3rd, MemeManTweets shared an image of a portrait found in Moe’s Tavern for The Simpsons map. The portrait in question is of the classic barbershop quartet episode primarily starring Homer, Skinner, Barney, and Apu. Only Apu is replaced in the image, with MemeManTweets and others accusing of being “whitewashed”.

In another reply, MemeManTweets posted, “obviously Apu’s been dead for a while but I feel like erasing an Indian man for a white dude is kinda racist”. Another tweet from MemeMan pointed out that Apu has been “whitewashed” before, such as in the Bart’s Comet episode.

Fortunately, it appears to be a genuine blunder from Epic Games. As pointed out by several other replies, there is another image in Moe’s Tavern where Apu is front and center with Otto, Homer, and Moe, completely unaltered.

It’s unknown how the mistake happened, but, on November 6th, Epic Games at least acknowledged it “wasn’t intentional” and that the picture is “being adjusted”. This presumably means Apu will have his rightful place restored as the barbershop quartet’s fourth man.

So far, Fortnite’s collaboration with The Simpsons has been phenomenal. There has been the controversy of $10 sidekicks, but The Simpsons content has been great. Epic Games has now teamed up with Family Guy and The Simpsons, and South Park is next assuming leaks are accurate.

Unfortunately, The Simpsons season in Fortnite is scheduled to end on November 28th. This will bring forth Chapter 7 which is rumored to have a Gala theme as well as a collaboration with James Bond.
