Hiroshi Yamauchi has died, Nintendo has announced. He was 85.

Yamauchi joined Nintendo as president in 1949, overseeing the firm’s playing cards business before leading its foray into the video games console industry.

The NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, GameCube and more were all launched under Yamauchi, before he handed over the role to current Nintendo president Satoru Iwata in May 2002.

Though Yamauchi was one of Japan’s richest men, he was reported to have lost $300 million in a single day after Nintendo’s share price fell soon after the launch of the Nintendo 3DS.

The cause of Yamauchi’s death is currently unknown.
