Whirlwind success Flappy Bird has been removed from digital stores permanently, creator Dong Nguyen has confirmed.
Nguyen announced that the title would not be returning to the App Store or Google Play in an interview with Forbes, saying:
“Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed. But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”
Nguyen also explained that his life “has not been as comfortable as [it had been] before” the game’s success, leading to his decision to remove it from the digital stores. “I couldn’t sleep,” he says. “I don’t think it’s a mistake. I have thought it through.”
Though it first released in May last year, Flappy Bird gained sudden popularity last week. Nguyen was said to be earning around $50,000 a day from the title.
The game’s popularity even led to UK bookmaker William Hill accepting bets on when the game would return, offering 4/1 odds on the game returning to the App Store this month, and evens on it returning this year.
And if you’ve already made that bet, it looks like you’re all out of luck.
“Thank you very much for playing my game,” Nguyen concluded.
