Square Enix has just announced that Final Fantasy XIV has reached a new milestone. The community now has over 10 million players worldwide, which isn’t too shabby at all, and is apparently greater than the combined population of Scotland and Wales — although, per an extremely restrained asterisk in the press release, this does include people who registered for the free trial. Square Enix says this success is largely due to the game’s ‘robust updates that consistently provide players with new content’.

The announcement follows the recent release of the expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, which raised the level cap to 70, introduced two new job classes (Red Mage and Samurai) and added new high-level raids.

News of the new player count record coincides with the release of patch 4.06 and the seasonal event Moonfire Faire, which takes place from August 8 to August 26. Players will be able to take part in new quests, facing off against Ultros and his massive tentacles. Successful adventurers can acquire event items to join in with the celebrations, including dyeable Faire versions of popular equipment and clothing. Participating in events related to the fair will unlock a number of rewards such as armour, clothing and other items for your house or character.

FFXIV Stormblood

Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG, taking place in the nation of Eorzea. The game places the player in the role of an adventurer following a series of cataclysmic events. The Stormblood expansion sees adventurers journey to the Gyr Abania region, liberating cities along the way.

Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC
