Final Fantasy XIII is to be released on Xbox 360 in Japan, despite earlier reports that such a release would never happen, Square Enix announced overnight at Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Media Briefing in Japan.

The game, which launched in Europe and North America on both platforms simultaneously, will hit stores in Japan on December 16 at a budget price.

Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the Xbox 360 version, known as the Ultimate Hits International version, will feature scenes cut from the original release, forming a post-game episode.

We’re checking with Square Enix now to find out if this extra episode will be available in Europe.

Update: Square Enix has told VideoGamer.com that the game will not feature a new episode. A book containing stories within Final Fantasy XIII has been confused with a new playable quest.
