Square Enix finally lifted the lid on some of the first new Final Fantasy VII Remake footage at the end of Sony's State of Play broadcast last night, giving us our first proper look at the long awaited retelling of the 1997 classic in almost four years.

The footage, which we've emebedded below, shows off some of the story beats many players will be familar with – particularly the introduction of Aerith the flower girl – and what appears to be actual gameplay, complete with UI from both battles and the escaping the Mako Reactor sequence. Characters like Barrett also return in the footage, capped off with the voice – but not the face – of a very familiar baddie.

Although it's only a short clip, it also promises more information to come 'in June' – which is interesting considering Sony will not be at E3 this year, but Square Enix will be, so we'd probably put our money on that update to come there. In the meantime, here's the trailer:
