It’s been 25 years since Final Fantasy 9 debuted on the OG PlayStation, and for the last 5 of those years we’ve been waiting for a remake of the iconic JRPG.

While multiple leaks over the past few years have claimed that Square Enix is working on a full remake of the ninth mainline FF game, one recent leak claims that the “troubled” project may actually be cancelled.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake may be dead

According to reknowned leaker NatetheHate, who previously leaked The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 9 Remake was in a troubled state, and may actually be cancelled.

Speaking on Resetera (thanks, Stealth40K), the leaker claimed that the remake was in a troubled state as of last month. Unfortunately, it may never actually release.

“As of last check it remains in development, to my knowledge,” the leaker claimed. “But I need to do a fresh check and see what a more current status is — as I did hear a month or so ago that it was in trouble and possibly cancelled.”

It’s well known that a Final Fantasy 9 Remake project was in development at some point. The title was part of a series of games included in the massive Nvidia Giga-leak back in 2021 and is one of the only included titles to have not been released.

The remake of FF9 is not expected to be a massive project on the scale of the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, but a single game that brings players back to that world. The exact scope of the remake isn’t currently known, but it should be somewhat larger than the 2000 original.

Alongside Final Fantasy 9 Remake, Square Enix is also working on other titles in the series. The final entry in the 7 Remake Trilogy is in active development, and the company is looking at games like Expedition 33’s success to perhaps bring the franchise back towards turn-based gameplay.
