Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has said Square Enix are “actively considering” the possibility of “DLC” when the game releases. This came during a newly published TGS 2025 interview with Wccftech, when Hamaguchi was asked whether Square Enix thought about DLC for FF7 Rebirth like FF7 Intergrade.
Hamaguchi admitted, “There were definitely some ideas to create a Rebirth DLC and that was the plan at a certain point in time,” however, plans changed when Square Enix “figured that what fans want the most is to bring the third installment as soon as possible”. Basically, making Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 took precedent over spending any time developing additional content for Rebirth.
While DLC for Rebirth is completely off the table, Hamaguchi added, “once we release the third installment, there is the possibility of having a DLC for that third installment”. The director elaborated, “With the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, there’s probably going to be a much wider audience for Final Fantasy as a whole. Whether we bring another new DLC or a full title, that’s something we are actively considering”.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Advent Children DLC
If Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 were to get DLC, the ideal scenario would be a retelling of Advent Children. FF7 Advent Children is a 2005 film that takes place two years following the conclusion to FF7, and it has an interesting story that brings back Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and more to stop Sephiroth again for the final time.
While we don’t know exactly how FF7 Remake Part 3 will end considering its differences from the original, we at least know that it will tie into Advent Children. This has been confirmed by Tetsuya Nomura, as well as producer Yoshinori Kitase who told Gamesradar in 2023 that “We are finally going to link up with Advent Children, that is going to be part of canon”.
Already teasing DLC before the game is even seen, let alone released, may be off-putting, but it’s important to clarify that is only being considered rather than officially planned. There are other ideas Square Enix could explore besides Advent Children, but a retelling of the 2005 film seems the most exciting on paper because of how it further concludes everyone’s story.
We don’t know when FF7 Remake Part 3 will come out, but Square Enix has assured fans “development is going well” with a “lot of content already playable”. As for more remakes beyond FF7, Hamaguchi has said FF6 would be “very cool to remake” as it’s his “favorite mainline title”.
There were reports of plans to remake Final Fantasy 9, but it might be cancelled following troubled development.
