After delivering Part 3 of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the director would enjoy the opportunity to “work on something completely new,” but has also admitted FF6 would be “very cool to take on as a remake” because it’s his “favorite mainline title”. We don’t know when the follow-up to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will come out, but Part 3 is expected by at least 2028. Aside from FF7, there have been leaks suggesting a remake of Final Fantasy 9, but there has since been speculation that it might be “cancelled” due to troubled development. While we still hope to one day see a remake of Final Fantasy 9, we would also love a remake of Final Fantasy 6.
Final Fantasy 7 remake director says Final Fantasy 6 would be “very cool to remake”
Jez Corden of Windows Central recently got the opportunity to interview Final Fantasy 7 Remake director, Naoki Hamaguchi, ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2025. The interview is worth digesting in its entirety as it discusses the future of Square Enix games on Xbox consoles to reach as broad an audience as possible.
As for what Naoki Hamaguchi hopes to work on after finishing Part 3, the director said, “I’ve put my heart and soul into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series for over a decade now [so] Working on something completely new would be quite fun”. However, if Hamaguchi “had all the time and money in the world,” he admits Final Fantasy 6 “would be very cool to take on as a remake” as it is his “favorite mainline title”.
Unfortunately, there’s no news or rumors regarding a remake of Final Fantasy 6. If it were to happen, it would be very exciting as FF6 is considered many people’s favorite FF installment alongside FF7 and FF9.
It would also be interesting to see because FF6 is a 2D installment unlike Final Fantasy 7 which was the first 3D entry on the PS1 back in 1997. While a fully-fledged AAA remake of FF6 would be amazing, another route Square Enix could take is delivering a HD-2D Remake similar to what they have done with Dragon Quest 3. This option would likely be preferable for diehard Final Fantasy fans who would want a more faithful remake unlike the FF7 trilogy.
Alas, right now all we have to look forward to is Part 3 and the conclusion of the FF7 Remake trilogy. Rebirth was phenomenal, and we cannot wait to see how the story we all know unfolds next considering the changes Square Enix have made so far.
