It looks like we could finally be getting an update on the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in the near future, after an update on the game was finally offered up by the development team.

Though brief, the official Final Fantasy Twitter account has offered up a statement from producer Yoshinori Kitase on the sequel to the 2020 Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Asked how work is going, he said “Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan. We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game”.

It’s a statement that’s sure to please those looking forward to the game, as we hadn’t heard much about the project since it was announced almost a year ago. It’ll make up the second part of a planned trilogy that started with the Remake – but will be telling a brand new story as (spoilers for FF7 Remake) that game made some drastic reveals which will allow for some massive changes. As to exactly what those changes are though – we’ll have to wait to find out more.

The news that Square Enix is nailing down a release date though is promising, as it no doubt means they have a decent amount of work done to be able to start planning out the finish line. Of course, Square also has another Final Fantasy game in Final Fantasy 16 due out later this month, so it won’t want the hype for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to eclipse that either.

Perhaps we’ll hear more on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth during Summer Games Fest next week, we’ll have to wait and see – but rest assured we’ll report on any new developments as they come in. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is currently pencilled in to launch as a PlayStation 5 exclusive ‘this Winter’.
