Divisive Japanese role-playing game Final Fantasy XIII is the fastest-selling game in the long-running series.

It’s recorded the largest first-week sales in Final Fantasy history, and is the fastest-selling UK game of 2010 so far, according to GFK Chart-track.

In North America alone, XIII has sold more than one million copies over the first five days, according to Square Enix.

It’s the fastest and biggest selling console game in Germany in 2010, and the best selling console game in France in 2010 so far.

Over five million copies of the game, which we gave a seven out of ten to in our review, have been shipped.

That impressive number brings the total number of Final Fantasy games shipped around the world up to an eye-watering 96 million copies.

“It’s great to see Final Fantasy XIII hitting the top of the UK charts and setting the pace as the fastest selling game of the year,” said Jon Brooke, UK Marketing Director.

“With high profile TV spots playing out beyond Easter and branded buses still travelling the country I’m positive this title is only going to get bigger and bigger.”
