Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions – an updated version of the original Final Fantasy Tactics game for the PSone – will be arriving on iPhone this Thursday.

The game will launch on the App Store for £12.99 ($15.99), but only for iPhone at this stage. Like previous Square Enix iOS offerings, the app will not be universal. A separate iPad version will follow in the autumn.

The game won’t feature the multiplayer mode included in the PSP version, nor will it feature any additional content. It does, however, boast new autosave functionality, as well as retina display support for iPhone 4. While the game will work on 3GS models, the 3G model simply isn’t powerful enough to run the game. Square Enix has ensured that the slow-down problem plaguing the PSP version has also been fixed.

Like Final Fantasy I, II and (especially) III, War of the Lions arrives on the App Store with a rather hefty price tag. And for that kind of money, I’m going to hold out for the iPad version, which will undoubtedly support an SRPG of this nature better than the small screen of the iPhone.
