BT is to trial a faster DSL service in the UK. Called Max DSL the trial will test speeds up to 8128kbps downstream and 448kbps upstream (with office users being able to get up to 832kbps upstream). This is a significant step up from the 512kbps downstream and 256kbps upstream that is currently the standard in the UK, although faster services are being offered and are becoming more popular.

With next generation consoles looming and an emphasis being placed on online services, current broadband speeds may not be able to compete with the advances that are being made in the hardware. An increased speed would enable developers to make games that have online functionality that matches the cutting edge hardware. Games could support more players and downloadable content could be received without a long wait.

The trials will run for up to twelve weeks and speeds will be dependent on distance from the telephone exchange.
