It’s not difficult to make an MMO, but it is difficult to market one, Star Wars: The Old Republic writing director Daniel Erickson has told VideoGamer.com.

Speaking at a recent Star Wars: The Old Republic press event, Erickson said: “It’s not more difficult to make one, it’s more difficult to market one.”

“Right now as a journalist if you say ‘I think this MMO will fail’ and you just fill in any random MMO, your percentage chance of being right is very, very high. So we’ve definitely seen a far more pessimistic perspective as we’ve come to market.”

Erickson added: “When we’ve tried to explain what we wanted to do there was a lot of ‘You can’t do that because it hasn’t been done’. When we’ve shown people they’ve said ‘OK sure, but it’s probably not going to succeed and it’s not going to come out’. And it’s because of the environment, a lot of people – not just press but fans as well, have been burned enough times on the whole MMO run that they’re holding caution.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released later this year.
