LucasArts’ 1993 space simulation shooter Star Wars: X-Wing is one of the most iconic PC games of the 90s. While other games like Dark Forces have received official remasters, the original game has been sadly left alone on PC.

However, one fan has used the Unity Game Engine to create a new remaster of the classic Star Wars game that runs on top of the original game. After a long period of development, the mod is available for all with brand-new 3D visuals, improved controls and even VR support.

Of course, there are also a number of sequels, follow-ups and even spiritual successors to the classic Star Wars simulator. Remember Star Wars: Squadrons? Now that was one hell of a game with a HOTAS and a VR headset.

Free Star Wars: X-Wing Remaster

Available to grab right here, the free Star Wars: X-Wing remaster has been dubbed XWVM. To use the mod, players need to have their own installation of the original game—either the 1993 floppy, 1994 CD, 1998 Windows Edition or the GOG/Steam versions—and install the mod on top.

“All game resource files (missions, voice overs, SFX, MIDI music, in-game graphics and 3D models, etc) are loaded from the player’s copy of the original game, or are replacements originally created by our team, where the original resources are considered inadequate for today’s standards,” the mod developers explain.

The mod is currently available in public alpha, but the developers plan to “keep on expanding the list of supported games” and add new features. The team describes the new mod as a “recreation of the infrastructure that runs the original missions, campaigns and cutscenes, and 3D models from scratch”.

Alongside gorgeous 3D recreations of the game’s vehicles and enemies, every 2D planet backdrop and element of the game’s scenery has also been remade. It’s gorgeous, and the new cockpit models look phenomenal. (After my work shift I will be deep in VR with this one.) There’s even an additional HD asset pack to download for even better visuals.

XWVM is just one of many versions of X-Wing that have been released over the years by dans. X-Wing Revival is an ongoing multiplayer version of the game, X-Wing Alliance Upgrade is a project that brings the game into X-Wing Alliance engine, and there are other similar fan projects. However, this is one gorgeous way to re-experience the original game if you want.
