Fallout 4 is almost 10 years old, but the next mainline in Bethesda’s extremely popular post-apocalyptic RPG may be starting early development very soon.

With multiple Fallout projects reportedly in the works, including Fallout 3 Remastered, it’s been claimed that one of these titles is the next mainline entry in the series. However, it will be a long time until we actually get to play it.

Fallout 5 has reportedly been greenlit

According to popular Xbox reporter Jez Corden, Fallout 5 is “fully greenlit” at Bethesda in the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast. With BGS working fully on The Elder Scrolls 6 after a lengthy engine upgrade and pre-production period, it will be a while until we see any results.

However, there has been a point of contention for Corden’s claims. During his section on the next game in the Fallout series, the Xbox journalist claimed that the cancellation of Zenimax Online Studio’s next MMO Project Blackbird was to allocate more resources to Bethesda.

The Xbox reporter said: “From what I heard, it was a case of ‘Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this [Project Blackbird MMO] to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?'”

This claim has already been debunked by trusted reporter Jason Schreier who first reported on the cancellation of Project Blackbird. Schreier, who previously reported on the entirety of Fallout 4 years before its official announcement, didn’t shut down the claims about Fallout 5, but definitively stated that Project Blackbird’s death has nothing to do with it.

“Xbox didn’t lay off thousands of people so they could move those resources to new projects,” the iconic games journalist said. “They laid off thousands of people to cut their overall fiscal year budget.”

Considering The Elder Scrolls 6 was greenlit over eight years ago, it’s no surprise that Fallout 5 is “fully greenlit”. In fact, it would be bizarre that Bethesda Game Studios and Xbox hadn’t greenlit the project.
