The lead producer on Fallout 3 has revealed further details of the forthcoming DLC pack, “Operation Anchorage”, stating that the add-on will provide around four to five hours of additional gameplay.

Bethesda’s Jeff Gardiner told IGN that the new content will focus on stealth, with less emphasis on the moral dilemmas that marked much of the main game’s side-quests. “Operation Anchorage” is a military simulator that allows players to experience the battle to liberate Alaska from the Chinese. The experience will be accessed by using an in-game machine, in the manner of Fallout 3’s Tranquility Lane section.

“The Chinese red army is everywhere, and the player will first have to secure the surrounding mountain side and then fight their way into the Chinese base,” explained Gardiner. “The player will have to use a lot of their standard combat skills, along with several new tools that will only be available in the downloadable content. These include interactive Strike Teams under the player’s command and unique armour, weapons, and other exotic gadgets.”

Gardiner added that in addition to a new perk, the DLC will also provide more pre-war weapons and tools that can be used in the rest of Fallout 3 – though it remains unclear how these items will move from simulation to the real world. A promotional pic released by Bethesda suggests that these will include gauss weapons – the highly powerful Small Guns that appeared in Fallout 2.

Fans will also be pleased to hear that Bethesda plans to raise the level 20 experience cap. The third DLC pack due for March 2009, Broken Steel, will continue the main storyline after the events which end Fallout 3.

“Based on a lot of feedback, we’re going to allow the player to continue on after the main quest ends in the Broken Steel DLC,” said Gardiner. “While a lot of details still have to be sorted, this will allow the player to continue on and play in the Wasteland enjoying the side and freeform quests, along with any new downloadable content we have planned in the future.”

Operation Anchorage will be released in January for Xbox 360 and PC, at a cost of 800 Microsoft Points.
