Games industry superdeity Sid Meier has descended from his magnificent throne to let the common people know that the upcoming Civilization World – known until now as Facebook Civilization – will enter its alpha stage on January 12.
Public signups are also open, though understandably you need to connect the Civilization World site with your Facebook account and fill out your details. Unexpectedly, however, you also need to form a team of players willing to take part.
The full version of the game will not have such a restriction, but the beta intends to use these pockets of players to simulate real-world conditions of the game’s newfangled social features. Teams can be anything between five and fifty players.
A team captain also has to be designated by the others, which will probably cause more social problems than when two people collude in private.
Players who get accepted into the beta will also be rewarded for their dedication with a glistening visual trinket for their resplendent throne room when the final game is released later in the year.
Writing, appropriately, on Facebook, Meier further explains what we can expect from Civilization World:
“Civ World games will have a well-defined beginning and end, each ending with a triumphant civilization and one person recognized as that game’s most prestigious player. Along the way, as you progress through the different eras of time, you’ll have the chance to win era victories as well. We want players to have both a final goal to work towards, as well as short-term objectives to achieve as they play. The trophies you unlock with your triumphs will carry over from game to game, and you can show them off in your throne room.”
