Launch week sales for Fable III were 6,000 units higher than those of Fable II, GfK Chart Track reports.

Fable III claimed the top spot in the UK All Formats All Prices video game chart and has become the 13th biggest Xbox 360 launch ever and the 4th biggest Xbox 360 launch of 2010.

2010 has been a good year for Microsoft, with Fable III following in the chart-topping success of Crackdown 2 and Halo: Reach. In 2009 only Halo 3: ODST managed to claim the No.1 spot.

Given the two-year gap between the release of Fable II and Fable III – during which there has been a considerable increase in the Xbox 360 userbase – a 6,000 sales increase for the third should be viewed as a minor success at best.

Fable II went on to sell approximately 3.5 million units, meaning Fable III has its work cut out for it if it is to achieves Peter Molyneux’s target of five million sales.
