Battlefield 6 is currently breaking records for peak concurrent player counts with the early access beta beating every prior game in the series before everyone is allowed to play. As Battlefield turns down dopey crossover skins as Call of Duty swan dives head first into Nikki Minaj and Beevis and Butthead slop, fans are hoping the game will finally teach CoD a lesson.
As it turns out, even former-Blizzard president Mike Ybarra is hoping that Call of Duty will be knocked down a peg now that he’s no longer working at Microsoft. The former Blizzard lead and Microsoft VP explained that the success of Battlefield 6 will do one very important thing: stop CoD from being lazy.
Battlefield 6 will force Call of Duty to change
Speaking to fans on Twitter, Ybarra claimed that Battlefield 6 will “boot stomp CoD this year”. With undiluted aesthetics, a brand-new overhauled Portal mode, gorgeously improved destruction and more, he could be right.
“£he real win here is CoD won’t be lazy anymore,” the former Blizzard president explained. “And we’ll all get better FPS games for it.”
When challenged on his thoughts, Ybarra explained that the Call of Duty series that led to the series’ consistently huge player counts is no longer present. Instead, the game has been ruined by poor decisions, greed and technical issues.
“CoD has gone downhill for years since then,” they explained. “It’s a mess. Cheating, heavy UI/install, rainbow colors. People are sick of it. Luckily BF will force them to change it.”
Of course, there is still the fact that Call of Duty itself feels almost unstoppable from year-to-year, especially when main releases come day one to Xbox Game Pass. It’s a juggernaut of a series, but it’s one that has annoyed the core gamer crowd for years now. While Black Ops 7 may retain the large casual audience, at least some of the series’ usual fanbase may jump ship.
Battlefield 6 launches on Xbox Series, PS5 and, of course, PC on October 10, 2025.
