The latest feature that Diablo 4 might be getting is Infinite Paragons, a call-back to D3, and it’s one of the most controversial changes that fans could possibly hope for. If you weren’t already familiar with Infinite Paragons, it’s a system that allows you to consecutively increase your paragon level without the traditional limit of 200, and even Elon Musk has had his say in this.

Normally, you earn four paragon points for each level you earn in Diablo 4. As you can only earn them from level 50 through 100, there’s a very limited supply available. If this new system is introduced, then there will be no-such level cap. The power scaling potential is as such infinite (unless a new level cap is introduced), and this could easily cause major issues in terms of balanced play between casual players and more seasoned veterans.

The Infinite Paragon system had been alluded to last week thanks to a trailer for the next Diablo 4 expansion.

Diablo 4 influencer Rob_2628 claimed that the Paragon Board begins at level 60 now, and that there are no more incremental separations per level. This was all based on gameplay reveal trailer footage, for clarity.

In a later post on Twitter / X, Rob_2628 asked audiences if they were interested in seeing an infinite paragon system and then lamented on possible concerns from the community. The post-game longevity increasing is definite plus, although Rob also gives reasoning for this is perhaps not a great idea: “The main progression in an ARPG should be about the loot and items,” continuing that balancing is already a prevalent issue in the game even without infinite paragons.

That’s where Twitter / X’s current owner chimes in: “Good points. Most important I think for getting character balance right is making it fun to play in a party with friends. If your character can only contribute [roughly] 2% as much damage as Barb/Sorc, which happened with Druid last season, it isn’t fun.”

I don’t often agree with Elon Musk on Twitter/X, though his Diablo 4 commentary is usually fairly favourable. Still, Rob went on to say that “balance within each class” is a more important issue that needs to be addressed, rather than simply as a whole.

A few weeks ago, a select few fans of Diablo 4 had been requesting some form of post-game progression beyond Level 100. Infinite Paragon points were one of the suggestions here. Responses were pretty direct; “No, infinite paragon progression was terrible in D3. That crap needs to stay out of D4,” said one, while another said that “it’s not going to happen because of the casual dads with 7 kids and 3 jobs that D4 panders to would be in uproar over not being able to max their character with 10 hours played.”
