One of the most famous players in online space-faring MMO EVE Online has announced his intent to step down from his position on a user-elected council after drunkenly encouraging users to grief a suicidal player.
Alex Gianturco, aka ‘The Mittani’, made the comments during a panel at last week’s EVE fanfest after a conversation was displayed suggesting a player was having suicidal thoughts.
“Incidentally, if you wanna make the guy go kill himself, his name is [removed]. He has his own corp. Find him,” said Gianturco (reported by Develop), nursing a bottle of Jägermeister at the time.
Gianturco was responsible for EVE Online’s most famous and publicised moment, when he managed to infiltrate and disable Band of Brothers, the game’s dominant corporation at the time. The event is referred to as “The Great War”.
Speaking on Twitter, Gianturco laid out his intentions: “Step one, apologize profusely. Step two, resign. Step three, send all my ISK to the victim. Entirely my fault and unacceptable. “So far Gianturco has confirmed he has done steps one and three – but is discussing the situation with EVE’s Council of Stellar Management before officially resigning.
“I’m relieved to discover that the Mackinaw miner is doing fine and mining away, despite being blown up by Goonswarm in-game,” said Gianturco in an apology on the EVE forums. “He deserves, and he has, my heartfelt apologies – here in public as well as a private apology. There’s no excuse for what I did – while some might try to use my inebriation as a mitigating factor, I put myself in that compromised mental state, and the guilt of that is entirely mine.”
“I am absolutely ashamed of my behaviour at the Alliance panel,” said Gianturco.
