Pre-SCEE E3 press conference (try saying that after a few Coronas) details have emerged regarding the European launch of Sony’s much-vaunted PSP. Alongside a typically strong software line-up, Sony have revealed that the system will launch with 19 UMD movies available from day one. The movies have a typically blockbuster whiff about them (Spiderman 2, SWAT, Hellboy, Charlie’s Angels et al) but it’s good to see that Sony haven’t given up on UMD as a format just yet.
On top of their own films (all 19 launch titles are from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment), Sony are positive about getting other studios on board claiming that the uptake of UMD has seen “the fastest support from Hollywood of any hardware launch ever”.
Software wise, the line-up from SCEE themselves is pretty much what you would expect with the western-developed World Tour Soccer, F1 Grand Prix, Wipeout Pure, Fired Up, World Rally Championship and MediEvil Resurrection being supported by Japanese produced stalwarts, Ape Academy, Ridge Racers and Everybody’s Golf.
Sony are also expecting a further 20 or so games from third-party publishers to bring the number of launch titles to an impressive 29 in time for the September release.
