Putting to rest rumours that have been flooding the internet today, Sony has confirmed it is not upping the cost of its PS3 across Europe, only in Ireland.

There will be a 30 Euro price hike there, to cover the local VAT rate of 21%, but for everyone else the PS3 is sticking at EUR 499 for the 20GB version and EUR 599 for the 60GB edition. This quashes earlier fears that there was going to be a blanket increase to the cost of the already expensive console, based on prices posted on PS3’s official Irish website.

Further concerns that the release of the console had slipped to April, following a quote from Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer, have also been quelled as Sony Europe President David Reeves again confirmed today the console was on course for a March release. Commenting on the news, Sony’s semi-official blog Three Speech added to this by saying the launch would be on March 23 – as previously rumoured.

A UK price and release date are now scheduled to be officially announced early next week. The PS3 is expected to cost UK gamers around £425. We’ll bring you official launch details as soon as they’re revealed.
