CNN is reporting that between 475,000 and 575,000 PSPs have been sold in the console’s first week on sale in North America. Approximately a third of all stores are said to have sold out, but many non-specialist stores still have plenty of stock remaining.
The 500,000 units sold is similar to what the Nintendo DS managed last Christmas in North America. However, the holiday season is generally a boom period for videogame sales, so exact comparisons cannot be drawn. The Nintendo DS was also almost completely sold out, with stock being very hard to find for a few weeks after the console was released. The PSP is still readily available if you look around and more stock is scheduled to arrive soon.
We still await news of the PSP’s release date in Europe, but leading industry news website gamesindustry.biz has reported that Europeans may have to wait until September 2005. We’ll bring you more news on the PSP’s sales figures and the European release date as soon as an official announcement is made.
