Epic Games is currently hard at work on five new projects, president Mike Capps revealed during a presentation at GDC Europe this morning.
While the games are reported to be in ‘varying’ stages of development, Mike Capps did confirm that none of them had anything to do with Gears of War.
“It’s nice to target the PC as a primary platform again,” teased Capps, “not just for ports,” suggesting that at least one of the studio’s projects will be making its way to the PC.
Capps did however suggest that the games would likely be smaller in scope than those previously helmed by the studio.
“At Epic we didn’t multiply the studio size by five when we started working on these multiple projects,” answered Capps, “so you can make some assumptions about the size of those projects”.
Responding to attendees, Capps then went on to highlight the benefits of micro-managing small projects alongside larger, triple-A titles like Gears of War.
“Everyone knows the middle class is disappearing from the console business,” admitted Capps. “Gears of War, I hope, will do really well, but a pretty good game doesn’t make its money back any more. A game like Homefront sells a couple of million copies and they close the studio, right?
“That’s not enough any more. That’s pretty depressing. You don’t want to see what happens to an industry where it’s Call of Duty, Halo and Gears and no-one else has enough money to make any games any more. That’s not a fun industry.
“I can’t bet my entire company every time I make a game,” admitted Capps. “That’s a really dangerous business.”
