Speaking to OXM about the Halo franchise, Rein has lavished praise on the multi-million selling video game series, noting that it’s the gameplay which has made it so popular.
“I don’t look at Halo and go, ‘That’s the greatest graphics’. I don’t look at Halo and go, ‘Wow those are the coolest enemies ever’. I look at Halo and go ‘They nailed it’. This game is so fun to play, everything works just right,” said Rein.
Rein continued: “For me Halo ushered in the shooter console revolution. In other words, it showed everybody that, if you made a perfect shooter for the console, you would sell tons. So we owe Halo a lot.”
The outspoken vp also believes that the success of Halo and the rise in popularity of the console FPS has enabled Epic to move into the console space with its Unreal Engine technology.
“It’s helped us move to console. It’s helped our licensing business because we make an engine that a lot of shooters are made on,” said Rein.
Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament 3 is expected for release on PC and PlayStation 3 in November, with the Xbox 360 version due early in 2008.
