Epic Games is suing Lucas Johnston, a tester at Montreal's Keywords Studios, for leaking ‘highly confidential information’ about Fortnite’s Chapter 2 update (via Eurogamer).
If you’re reading this and feeling more than a tinge of déjà vu, that’s because the developer took legal action against a Fortnite user experience tester in October. Ronald Sykes was accused of revealing lots of the new features arriving in the battle royale once the black hole hiatus came to a close.
Epic Games does not mess around and it deems Johnston to have violated his non-disclosure agreement when he took a screenshot of the new world. This screenshot appeared on a Fortnite Competitions’ official forum over a month before Chapter 2 debuted, and it was posted by a user who is friends with Johnston.
He stated that he emailed the screenshot to himself and maintains that he has no idea how it became public. Nevertheless, Epic Games claims that the playtester’s actions, ‘“deprived [the developer] of the element of surprise,” tipped off its competitors to its strategy and affected its reputation among its peers’. The company is seeking yet-unspecified damages in excess of $85,000.
