Epic Games vp Mark Rein has responded to mounting reports that the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 will be inferior to the PC and PS3 versions.
Posting on the Epic Games forums Rein notes that Epic is a multi-platform company and as such likes a lot of platforms and “will deliver UT3 for all of these platforms and it will rock on every one.“
Rein does acknowledge that the DVD storage on the Xbox 360 is causing some problems, but it’s nothing that can’t be overcome.
“If we exceed size of the 360s optical disc then we’ll have to find alternative ways to get the content to 360 users such as making it downloadable,” said Rein. “Adding a second DVD to a game like UT3 would be a challenge because when playing online you might not know exactly what map you’re going to be playing next and we have to be able to accommodate users of the core system.“
There’s a possibility storage limitations will mean the disc ships with a few less maps compared to PS3 and PC versions, but Rein states that “it is too early to tell for sure“.
Rein also notes that to get the full experience from most major games on PS3 and Xbox 360 the hard drive is going to be required, and UT3 will be no different.
“We’re all very used to downloading extra content for console games and with UT3 there will be lots of it for all supported platforms. In fact the cool thing about our engine is that when you make content for one platform it can run on all of them,” he said.
Speaking of extra downloadable content, Rein also seemed confident that user generated mods for UT3 will be supported on the Xbox 360.
“… we will work with Microsoft to find a way to support them,” stated Rein. “We just don’t have all the answers today and it isn’t our chief priority at this very moment because we already have our hands completely full shipping UT3 on PC and PS3 as well as shipping Gears of War on PC.”
Unreal Tournament 3 is scheduled for release on PC and PlayStation 3 in November 2007, with the Xbox 360 version expected to ship early in 2008.
