Free-to-play gaming won’t become the industry standard “as quickly as everyone thinks” according to Epic Games president Mike Capps.

Capps explained the traditional console business will remain viable regardless of this recent free-to-play trend. Speaking to Gamasutra he said:

“It’ll be a while before the trend [toward microtransaction-based games] hits the console space

“As long as we’re stuck with the initial $60 retail purchase, it’ll be tough. I don’t know about most gamers, but as soon as I spend $60, I don’t want to spend five times that on additional sales for the game – I feel like I should get a good solid experience for that money.”

He added that the industry may be moving in the direction of free-to-play titles but it won’t immediately change the current standards.

“I certainly think the industry is moving in a direction toward downloadable and free-to-play games, but I don’t think it’s going to be moving quite as quickly as everyone thinks.”

However, recently it has been revealed that Microsoft is working toward introducing free-to-play games to Xbox 360 thanks to a new micro-transaction system.
