Gamasutra has learned that a Halo MMO project was in development at the now condemned Ensemble Studios, although it’s thought the title was cancelled at some point in mid to late 2007.
The industry website has also uncovered prototype user interface and in-game screen shots of the Ensemble Halo MMO. The screens were briefly available on an Ensemble-linked online artist portfolio website.
Rumours that Ensemble was working on a Halo MMO go back as far as early 2006 when Game Informer claimed the studio was teaming up with Bungie to work on the project. In April of the same year 1UP noted that Ensemble was hiring staff for an MMO.
It’s thought the Halo MMO project was cancelled at some time in mid to late 2007, with the development team being moved on to a number of other prototypes.
Microsoft has previously confirmed that there are more than two or three teams working on Halo projects, so the cancellation of Ensemble’s MMO by no means rules out the prospect of another Halo-themed MMO being in development at another studio.
