The Elder Scrolls Online will receive harder story content in future updates as Zenimax works on new missions that are aimed at long-time players. After hearing fan complaints for a number of years, the developer is aware of fans wishes for the team to stop releasing easy content.
Developers working on ESO are making the game’s future content more difficult in response to fan complaints. While specific plans have not been confirmed, zone lead Jason Barnes explained that the game will be more difficult in the future.
Elder Scrolls Online story content will be more difficult
Speaking in a recent Q&A, Barnes explained that there are “ongoing plans” to create new story content that is more difficult. In the past, ESO’s main story content has remained rather easy as players are encouraged to start a character on any expansion they want.
Barnes teased that future updates could add difficulty levels for players who want to experience the game’s new stories without stomping through enemies. On the other hand, the game could simply make story content harder by default, although that would go against the game’s structure that allows players to start on whatever expansion they want.
When asked about the discussions for higher difficulty levels for story content, Barnes explained: “I will say that there are ongoing plans for that and it’s in the works. We’re not ready to talk about it yet, but we’ve acknowledged openly that it is something we’re looking at, and there’s people working on it. I’ll leave it at that.”
The Elder Scrolls Online has some massive plans for the rest of 2025. Alongside the new Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 update releasing next month, Part 2 will release sometime in Q4 2025 that adds anew Zone Expansion with a story finale, new gear, dungeons and much more.
For the first time the game’s launch, the Seasons of the Worm Cult updates continues a story from the base game of ESO. The Part 1 update also introduces subclassing, allowing players to swap two class Skill Lines for options from other classes.
